About the Neighborhood

South Lake Union is an area rich in history that is undergoing massive change. Long an area of commercial and light industrial uses, the neighborhood is quickly transforming into a place for Seattle residents to live, work and play. South Lake Union has been flagged as a biotech hub with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Zymogenetics, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and UW Medicine calling it home. Recently, major online retailer Amazon.com said it would move its headquarters to the neighborhood. Hundreds of new residents will be moving in shortly with Vulcan’s condo projects Enso, Rollin Street Flats and Veer Lofts all underway. Linking these businesses and residences to Seattle’s downtown core is the now operational South Lake Union line of the Seattle Streetcar. And Seattle’s new waterfront attraction, Lake Union Park, will add 12 acres of green space overlooking the water by 2010.
